
Carla M. Wiemers has been the Office Administrator and assistant to the President at Onondaga Environmental Institute(OEI) since1994. The OEI is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to public education, scientific research, planning and restoration of the environment. Her duties involve maintaining office financials, tracking office expenses, oversight of yearly audit, administering payroll and employee benefits, along with providing payments to sub-contractors and overall tracking of grants from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to OEI for revitalization of Onondaga Creek, habitat enhancement, non-point source pollution control to Onondaga Lake and water quality monitoring and public education on behalf of the Onondaga Nation. She serves as the initial contact for local and state government officials and agencies, as well as the public and media. She co-edited The State of Onondaga Lake pamphlet and edits other documents produced by OEI. Other responsibilities include scheduling of meetings, correspondence and other administrative duties. From 1994 to 2001, she was the recording secretary for the Onondaga Lake Management Conference (OLMC) and Citizens Advisory Committee to the OLMC. Ms. Wiemers currently serves as Secretary to the OEI’s Board of Directors.
Ms. Wiemers’ educational background includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Salem State College at Salem, Massachusetts and teaching experience in the Lynn Massachusetts Public School System. In the past, Ms. Wiemers was employed by DuPont Merck Pharmaceutical Company as the Northeast Regional Coordinator. She coordinated administrative functions of a complex and confidential nature for over 150 personnel. She published a regional newsletter and designed presentations and logos. She received many regional awards for outstanding dedication, initiative and teamwork. Ms. Wiemers was also employed by Grace Episcopal Church in Baldwinsville, New York as Education Director. She was responsible for the development of curricula, recruitment of teachers, supervision of individualized teaching for "special need" children, publication of a monthly training newsletter and creation of special programs and retreats. She received recognition for high participation of youth within the parish and at the diocesan level. As a licensed Lay Eucharistic Minister and Lay Reader in New York State, Ms. Wiemers is qualified to conduct services in place of a parish priest in an emergency.
Ms. Wiemers is co-founder, past officer and board of directors’ member of the Friends of Beaver Lake Nature Center; a non-profit organization that provides funding and volunteer manpower to one of the most active nature centers in New York State. She has served as chairperson of the Development and Fundraising Committees and as a member of the Finance and Future Planning Committees. She is a past officer of Harbour Heights Homeowners Association, a member of the American Humane Society, Cornell Feline Health Center and Hope for Bereaved. Other interests include gardening, landscaping, photography, design and tailoring of clothing, geocaching, camping, and her most recent endeavor, beekeeping.
